What is the Third Sector:

Third sector consists of associations and nonprofits, and is ranked as the third sector, in sociology. The term is of American origin, Third Sector, widely used in the United States, and Brazil uses the same classification.

Civil society is divided into three sectors, first, second and third. The first sector is formed by the Government, the second sector is formed by private companies, and the third sector are the NPOs. The third sector contributes to reach places where the state failed to reach, doing solidarity actions therefore has a key role in society.

There are several organizations that are part of the third sector, such as NGOs (Non Governmental Organizations) and OSCIPs (Organizations of Civil Society of Public Interest). The third sector is composed almost in its entirety, hand labor voluntary, people who work and receive no remuneration for this.

The third sector is maintained with private initiatives and even incentives of the Government with the transfer of public funds. The nonprofit organization whose main objective is to improve quality of life for those in need, be it children, adults, animals, environment, etc.

Foundations, associations, third sector institutions are often involved with philanthropic works. It should be noted that companies that have social responsibility can also contribute to a more balanced and just society.

Third sector and social service
The third sector is closely related to the area of social work, and often social workers play a key role in the performance of the third sector elements in society. Thus, we can say that the third sector is responsible for social development.

Third sector in Brazil
In Brazil, the third sector is not as strong as in countries like the United States, which has several institutions and a wide network of volunteers.

A nonprofit actor acting in Brazil may have their headquarters abroad. Even if it happens, the accounting, the entity shall follow the NBC (Brazilian Accounting Standards) which are established by the Federal Accounting Council (CFC).

Social responsibility is a broad concept on the companies as well as maintaining your business, care about the social development of all people or things involved in its production chain as a community, consumers, through environment, government, etc. This concept, widespread from the 1990s through the ages has been distorted for the benefit of small groups to gain competitive advantage. This issue has only been discussed in the first decade of the twentieth century by Charles Eliot, John Clark and Arthur Hakley, despite having not evolved because the ideas of these thinkers were considered socialist.
Here are some practices of environmental responsibility:
1. Caring and respect the environment;
2. Plan actions that encourage sustainable development;
3. To perform the principles of corporate governance, both within and outside the company;
4. Partner with non-governmental entities, ie create responsible networks;
5. Implementation of volunteer projects or resource donations to the community. This action is called Private Social Investment.

In Brazil , concern for social responsibility emerged in the 60’s from various business moves to encourage the practice of social actions. Thus arose the Christian Association of Business Executives (ADCE) in São Paulo; the Foundation Business Development Institute and Social (FIDES); the Brazilian Institute of Social and Economic Analysis (IBASE); Group Institutes, Foundations and Companies (GIFE), Ethos Institute for Corporate Social Responsibility, among others. The latter was one of the main institutions to promote and encourage the responsible thinking within companies, creating practices and policies related to business and working together with society.

Since then, several companies started to create their foundations and institutes. Initially, these practices were seen with bad eyes, a form of marketing business just for self-promotion. Then the concept was adjusted, and many of them have set up their projects and actions and social responsibility began to generate a return not only cash for the company, but a social profit.
